The 2020 NFL season has begun, and after a loss to the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers face the New York Jets in week 2. The 49ers lead 7-0 in the 1st quarter, and it is 3rd and 8. Jimmy Garoppolo takes a crucial hit to his legs and is slow to get up. It was a scary sight to see for 49er fans and the 49er staff. But Jimmy G. fights to throw and continues to the play game, but we can all see he is hurting after every throw. Jimmy Garoppolo is ruled out of the game after Halftime and does not see the field until week 5.
Resilience is an attribute athletes need to have because not every season or game will be perfect. Mistakes are going to be made, a bad game will happen, or a season may not go the way it was planned, but they need to have the ability to be resilient and move past all the negatives of the past and strive to be better. Athletes are going to face adversity and criticism from the media but how will they respond and injuries are a part of the game, but how will they return well, ask Jimmy Garoppolo, who has faced tons of criticism and a couple of injuries. I believe Jimmy Garoppolo has the resilience to bounce back next year and have a great season with the 49ers.
Jimmy Garppolo is the San Francisco 49ers quarterback and has been for the past three-four years. He showed greatness when being traded to the 49ers in 2017, leading the team on a 5 game winning streak to end the season. He even has appeared as a starting QB in the Superbowl and led the 49ers to a 13-3 season last year.
But the 2020-2021 season has not gone the way the 49ers or Jimmy Garoppolo had planned. After last year’s heartbreaking Super Bowl loss, the 49ers were determined to get back to the superbowl calling this season “The Revenge Tour,” and it has been far from that, especially for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo since there is no question if he will even be back on the 49ers next season.
So far, Jimmy has only started 6 games and is questionable to return later in the year. Jimmy has been dealing with an ankle injury since week 2, after suffering a high ankle sprain against the Jets, and even when he returned he still did not look 100% healthy, and after the Seahawks games in week 8 Jimmy was put on the injured reserve list.
According to Fox Sports, in those 6 games he started, he threw for 1,096 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions, decent stats for 6 games but not extremely impressive. In the 2019-2020 season, Jimmy G. started all 16 games and had 3,987 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions (per PFF). He had a great season last year, but this season has been a huge decline, and now everywhere is questioning his health and if he will be back with the 49ers next year.
Jimmy G. has come back from an injury before, and it was even more gruesome. In 2018 Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL in week 3 against the Kansa City Chiefs ending his season. An ACL tear occurs in the knee and it can be fatal to an athlete and their future. Some players who have torn their ACL come back but don’t look the same and can’t really play. In 2015 running back Jamaal Charles, a four-time Pro Bowler with the Kansa City chiefs tore his ACL. He returned but had to undergo surgery on his knee again and was released by the Chiefs, he went to the Denver Broncos but he was not the same player. So players sometimes cannot make a full return but Jimmy G. had a stellar return season.
Jimmy Garoppolo proved he had extreme resilience when returning in 2019 and leading the 49ers to the superbowl and a 13-3 record. He was also top 5 for multiple categories among QBs including touchdowns. Now sadly the 49ers did lose that superbowl to the Kansa City Chiefs, the very team who ended his 2018 season. But still the fact that Jimmy tore his ACL and then the very next season led his team to the #1 seed in the NFC and a superbowl appearance is outstanding and shows true resilience, so why can’t Jimmy do that next year? Jimmy Garoppolo has always been a winner.
His career win/loss record is 24-8, and Jimmy has never had consecutive losses. Garoppolo is 6-0 after a regular-season loss. He is built off resilience; whenever he loses, he makes sure to come back stronger and better than before. Now even though he has struggled this season you can’t put all the blame on Jimmy G.
The 49ers have struggled to stay healthy this season and have had an insane amount of injuries. They lost star cornerback Richard Sherman in Week 1 with a calf injury and they lost All-Pro tight end George Kittle to a leg injury as well. In Week 2, the 49ers lost former defensive rookie of the year Nick bosa, star running back Raheem Mostert, Jimmy Garoppolo, and former first-round pick Solomon Thomas.
Bosa was a key reason for their superbowl appearance and he tore his ACL and is out for the season. Thomas also tore his ACL taking his season away as well. Jimmy G. and Mostert missed a couple of weeks as well, and Mostert has been in and out of the IR (Injured Reserve) list since this injury. Mostert was a force to be reckoned with after his astounding NFC championship performance of 4 touchdowns and 220 yards, so losing him and Bosa was going to hurt the 49ers badly.
They lost 5 key players in a matter of two weeks, and when Jimmy G. returned against the Dolphins with a depleted roster, it showed how important they were and when Moster and Kittle returned the following week, the 49ers took down the Rams. But Jimmy, Mostert, and Kittle could not stay healthy. Mostert would go back on the IR list after defeating the Rams, and after the Week 8 loss to the Seahawks, Jimmy G. and Kittle would go on that list as well.
With Jimmy Garoppolo’s ability to stay healthy now in question his future with the 49ers was also in question and still is. But if he is gone, who will replace him? The 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan are 22-8 with Jimmy and 6-24 without him starting (Peter Panacy). This team has needed Jimmy to win, their current QB Nick Mullens has shown he is just a suitable back up. And the 3rd string QB C.J. Betheard has shown in previous years he will never be a good starting QB. Nick Mullens is 2-4 this season with 9 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, 1,958 and a quarterback rating of 48.8. Mullens is healthy and still not putting up franchise QB numbers.
The 49ers currently do not have a replacement QB, but what about the draft or signing or possibly trading for one? The 49ers do not have any cap space to spend on signing a QB or trading for one. They have to put their money elsewhere and extend star linebacker Fred warner and resign star tackle, Trent Williams.
They have other key free agents such as Richard Sherman, fullback Kyle Juszczky, cornerback Jason Verret, safety Jaquiski Tartt and many more. Spending money on an already established QB would be extremely hard for the Niners. The 49ers are currently 5-7 with 4 games and are currently sitting around the number 15th or 16th draft pick. I truly don’t see any of the quarterbacks dropping that far down so the Niners won’t be in a position to draft a QB unless they trade up. They are notable, trade, or sign a QB, so Jimmy Garoppolo is their only suitable option and is not a terrible option.
Not only has Garoppolo faced injury, but he has also faced a lot of criticism from the media and fans. Any time Jimmy G. makes a mistake the media and fans jump right onto him and bash him and his game. There have been multiple times when the media asks Jimmy’s fellow teammates about him and his mistakes; the teammates always have his back, which shows the type of leader and person he is.
Jimmy has gained all his teammates' respect, and it shows when Jimmy gets bashed every week, but yet his teammates have his back and defend him. Jimmy G. gets tons of hate from the fans as well. Some even say the backup QB should replace. There was a conversation after Nick Mullens defeated the New York Giants. He should be the starter the remainder of the season, but after an awful performance against the Eagles that conversation was closed.
The dude was one throw away from a possible Super Bowl win and has shown he can play. Jimmy has shown a lot of things like being a winner, but most importantly, he has shown incredible resilience. Jimmy has struggled this year, has gotten injured, and has gotten tons of criticism. He has that resilience to bounce back next year and start for the 49ers, and when he is in, the Niners win pretty often.
Ronald Koeman could use the Supercopa de Espana to win his first title as Barcelona coach, and will at least contest his first final in the competition after his team edged past Real Sociedad in Cordoba this evening in the first semi-final.
The Blaugrana opened the scoring in the first half before conceding in the second, but managed to win their first penalty shoot-out since 1998 after extra-time kept them at 1-1.
Barcelona took the lead in the 39th minute, and it was one of the young players who’s really stepped up in recent weeks, Frenkie de Jong, who pulled the trigger. Antoine Griezmann squared for the Dutch midfielder, whose header arced past La Real’s goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
De Jong turned from hero to villain, however, shortly after the second half got underway. He handled the ball in the box to concede a penalty that La Real’s captain and talisman Mikel Oyarzabal was never going to miss.
Neither team could find a winner as the 90 minutes reached its end and then throughout extra-time, although Marc-Andre ter Stegen was on hand to pull of a number of truly outstanding saves to keep Barcelona in the game.
The German goalkeeper was the hero in the penalty shoot-out, too, as the Blaugrana won 3-2. Mikel Merino and Adnan Januzaj scored for La Real, but Jon Bautista, Oyarzabal and Willian Jose all failed to score.
De Jong and Griezmann missed for Barcelona but Ousmane Dembele, Miralem Pjanic and Riqui Puig all converted to send Barcelona through to Sunday’s final against either Real Madrid or Athletic Club Bilbao, who play tomorrow night.
Speaking post-match, Puig, who scored Barcelona’s winning penalty, was unsurprisingly delighted, and the youngster had a surprising revelation in store in comments carried by Marca.
“There were four names and a blank space,” Puig said post-game in relation to who was going to take the penalties. “I was the first to say that I wanted to take it. I had it very clear, with a lot of desire to shoot and be able to score a goal with the first team.”

Puig has had a difficult season, with Koeman repeatedly saying that the Catalan doesn’t fit into his plans at the moment and should go on loan to gain first-team experience.

“I’ve never lost my smile,” Puig said. “I’m a pretty happy kid, that even though I don’t play things are going very well for me. I have family, health and I can’t complain at all.
“If Ronald gives me minutes I will be grateful and take advantage of it. If not, I’ll continue working. I’ll never throw in the towel, not after so many years at the club, knowing how much it has cost me to get to the first team. Now that I’m here I’m not going to throw it away.”
